This is the second edition of "Super Flies ~ Color," incorporating minor editorial corrections and several fresh new images. This 8.5 x 11” full-color edition features over 140 color photographs and is what one might describe as the deluxe "Super Flies" edition. I set out to provide photographs of all 52 featured Super Flies using genuine vintage Eagle Claw and Mustad hooks whenever possible, tied in the proportions that were considered appropriate for these flies as they were tied decades ago. The original 6 x 9" black-and-white edition has been discontinued. This fly pattern collection features the 52 best trout and steelhead flies I tied as a novice professional in the mid-1960s and 1970s, finished off with steelhead, salmon, and sea-run cutthroat flies I have been developing in the last two decades. The waters I fished across Oregon include Cascade lakes, Willamette Valley streams, the Deschutes, Klamath, Williamson, Rogue, North Umpqua, coastal rivers, and the ocean near Pacific City. These flies have been effective over the years in the waters I’ve fished, but more importantly, they produced dependably for thousands of anglers who fished in rivers and lakes across the western US states, Alaska, British Columbia, the Great Lakes, South America, and New Zealand. My personal experience - plus hundreds of stories told by friends and fly shop customers - all speak to the staying power of these flies. With a foreword by Rich Youngers, highly respected tyer of Classic Atlantic Salmon, Spey, and Dee style flies; former owner of Creekside Fly Shop; Oregon FFF Fly Tyer of the Year (2006); and Professional Fly Fishing Guide, Salem, Oregon. Look forward to plenty of fishing stories and tying advice intended to enlighten and entertain. I have also produced a new, abbreviated version of this book—"Super Flies II" is a lean presentation of all 52 flies in 86 lean pages that still retain images of all 52 flies with recipes and tying notes. Please note I encourage you to take this soft cover book to someplace like Office Max or Kinkos to have it spiral bound with plastic cover. This is inexpensive and allows you to lay the book flat on a desk and prolongs the "like new" look of the book. Thanks very much.

Super Flies Color For Trout Steelhead Salmon Cutthroat Jay W Nicholas Rich Youngers 9781500885519 Books Reviews
Excellent book and a must for anyone interested in saltwater flyfishing on the west coast. This book is based on lots of experience on the water trying different patterns and techniques. Jay is an excellent saltwater fly fisherman and fly tyer. A must read.
A wonderful trip down memory lane for us Northwest anglers who cut our teeth on fly tying and fly fishing in the late '50s and early 60's. I, too, tied many of these patterns and like Jay, sold them to a local hardware store, making just enough money to buy more hooks and materials. It's nice to see that a few people still remember the old Eagle Claw 1197 hooks, the best thing going for Steelhead and Sea-run Cuts. I loved the chuckles, and the memories this book provided and recommend it whole-heartedly.
Does the challenge of chasing fish with a fly keep your brain charged? Do you appreciate the history behind a tried and true classic fly design? You know they're ageless for a reason? Awesome! Congrats!.... you are hopeless like the rest of us poor saps that invest so much emotional weight into a flimsy stick that chucks a ball of fur and feathers. Thankfully we have a champion of our beloved obsession in Jay Nicholas. There are few that can color it sweeter with words. This book is an honest and invaluable document of 40+ years of dedication to fly tying and fishing in the Pacific Northwest. It would be a disservice to any fishing library to exclude such a rich labor of love that Jay is so generously is putting out there. He divulges secrets within it like he is speaking to a trusted friend. Don't worry Jay, your secrets are safe with me )
From someone who has spent 40+ year fly fishing Oregon’s many streams and lakes, I think Jay has hit a home run with his book “Super flies”.
Reading this book brought back a flood of memories from when I was a teenager developing my tying skills on Tied Down Caddis, Female Coachman, Langtry Stone Flies, Adams …. I would bring my weekly creations to my mentor Wayne Doughton, who promptly destroyed my ego by ripping apart the body proportions, the crowded heads, the crossed hackles etc. But my skills improved and despite my rudimentary talent I found that my flies would still catch fish. Why? Because these patterns that Jay has written about are “Super Flies”!
What I enjoyed most about this book was the style Jay employed in writing this book, his personal anecdotes and brief history of the flies and their usage. If one reads closely this book you can visualize a bit of the history of fly fishing and fly tying in the Willamette Valley in the decades of the 60’s & 70’s; a time when we didn’t have the genetically modified hackles, no internet to buy your materials from, and the Thompson Model A vice was top of the line.
I feel this book does a good job of helping the beginner select fly patterns to fill his box, when to use them, how to tie them and also how to fish them and where. His stories of trout fishing may be from a time not all of us remember, but Jay has given the reader a good idea of the time of year to fish and in some cases where to fish. Oh by the way the fish still respond to these flies today the same as they did in 1980.
Early on a rainy Saturday December morning in Oregon, I found myself at my not-so-local fly shop that’s 100 miles from home, looking to purchase a new fly-tying vise. I was browsing around and off in a quiet corner of the shop I found a gentleman sketching steelhead and salmon profiles. I found his drawings intriguing and approached the man sitting at the table. This fellow was none other than Jay W. Nicholas, author, biologist and most important of all, fellow fly fisher and fly tyer. He had just published some new books and was there at the shop showcasing them.
When it comes to books, I am usually drawn to digital publications. But on this occasion, after browsing a few books he had on the table, I was intrigued by SUPER FLIES - COLOR FOR TROUP, STEELHEAD, SALMON AND CUTTHROAT.
This book boasts of 52 fly patterns and recipes for what I would consider vintage style flies. If you’re into tying flies and/or fly fishing and its history, you know that there are some fly patterns that withstand the test of time and will catch just as many fish as any modern style fly.
In this book, Jay takes you through the trials and tribulations of his adventures in accurately tying some of these vintage fly patterns with vintage materials and hooks. Within each pattern he describes, Jay includes personal stories which mindfully put you in what he was thinking at the time when he first fished these flies, or specific experiences he had in his commercial career of tying flies for others. If you are a beginning fly tyer, this book will not necessarily give you a step-by-step how-to, but if you have the basics down, you can surely be able to reproduce these flies easily. There are wonderful close-up photographs and sketches of each fly pattern, as well as heart warming stories of being on the water, fishing with friends and having a good time.
He does also describe how to fish these flies, a point that a lot of modern fly tying books seem to miss these days.
This book also comes in a version where it replaces color photographs with black/white sketches. The purpose of this is to provide the basic fly design, allowing the tyer to use their imagination and interpret the sketches in their own way.
I decided to get the color photograph version in conjunction with another of Jay’s books, SKETCH FLIES, FISH, FLY FISHING. I had to have both so I can peer into Jay's mind as a fly designer and tyer.
Many of the stories told are of years past, but also puts us in present times. Much like vintage flies, Jay’s book, SUPER FLIES - COLOR, will withstand the test of time.
I bought this book based on Jay Nicholas' work on the Oregon Fly Fishing blog and his own blog. Jay manages a very nice mix of technical information on the actual fly tying and the little windows into the time people spend fly fishing. The book is easy to read and provides good detail and insight. I am a novice fly fisherman and fly tyer but was able to understand and relate to the content.
Excellent
